Our Story

 

Din Tai Fung originated in Taiwan, where it was first established in 1958 as a cooking oil retailer by founder Mr. Yang Bing Yi with his wife, Madam Lai Pen Mei. Mr. Yang's previous employer's bulk cooking oil business was shut down in the same year. In remembrance of his previous employer, the name Din Tai Fung is a combination of Mr. Yang's previous employer, "Heng Tai Fung", and their new supplier, "Din Mei Oils".

 

In the 1970s, the tinned cooking oil industry overtook the bulk cooking-oil industry and Din Tai Fung’s business was badly affected. To survive, Mr. Yang and his wife converted half of their shop to sell steamed soup dumplings known as Xiao Long Bao.

 
 

Din Tai Fung’s Xiao Long Bao quickly became very popular and customers began to spread the word far and wide. The restaurant business flourished and the store stopped selling cooking oil and transformed into a full-fledged restaurant in 1972.

 

Din Tai Fung’s first outlet overseas was in Tokyo, Japan. Today, it has more than 200 outlets offering a taste of Taiwan to customers in Japan, USA, China, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Australia, UAE, Philippines, and UK.

Our Milestones


  • Din Tai Fung opened its first outlet in Malaysia at The Gardens Mall, Mid Valley.


  • Din Tai Fung opened its first outstation outlet - Penang Gurney Plaza.


  • Din Tai Fung opened its first outlet in Johor State - Johor City Square.


  • Din Tai Fung opened DIN by Din Tai Fung, its first non-pork outlet to cater to Muslim clientele in Suria KLCC.


  • To date, there are 7 Din Tai Fung restaurants and 8 DIN by Din Tai Fung restaurants in Malaysia.
